Seattle University Youth Initiative
The Seattle University Youth Initiative (SUYI) unites the university and the wider Seattle community to develop successful youth, thriving communities, and an engaged neighborhood. Each year it connects about 100 SU students with nearby schools and early-learning centers, improving the educational experiences of more than 1,000 local kids, from pre-school through high school, and helping to prepare them for success in school and in life. SU students serve as mentors, support summer enrichment programs, provide family engagement programming, and more.
In 2019, The Remala Foundation endowed a new scholarship at the university to support one undergraduate student participating in SUYI each year. Recipients are pursuing STEM-related degrees, have financial need, and support the university's goal of promoting a diverse student body. Each of them has also demonstrated a commitment to working with underrepresented or disadvantaged populations through their community service.
“The Remala Family Foundation Endowed Scholarship provides opportunities for Seattle University students to pursue studies in STEM related fields while also working to address some of Seattle’s most intractable issues,” says Kent Koth, executive director of SU’s Sundborg Center for Community Engagement. “I’m so appreciative of this impactful investment in our students and our community.”
